Despite
the recent strain in relations,. Korea, Japan and China agreed at an
annual meeting on Monday to put their differences aside. in the name of
combating cross-border air pollution and climate change.
Connie
Lee has more. In Kita-kyushu , Japan. the 15th Tripartite Environment
Ministers Meeting came to a close late Monday. with representatives from
Korea, China and Japan shaking hands after signing a joint communique.
They agreed to cooperate and address the environmental challenges they all share,. particularly air pollution.
In
the joint communique,. the three nations vowed to cooperate in joint
research projects. in fields such as green development, bio-diversity
and air pollution.
The agreement also includes establishing a
"Tripartite Policy Dialogue on Air Pollution". through which the
countries will exchange information on environmental policies, new
technologies for monitoring and technologies for prevention and control.
The nations also pledged to cooperate in the launch of the
Green Climate Fund. which is based in the Korean city of Incheon. to
help developing nations combat climate change.
The two-day meeting came amid heightened tensions in the region.
Recent
comments out of Japan suggesting a denial of wartime aggressions led to
condemnation from the Korean government,. while territorial disputes
remain between Japan and Seoul over the Dokdo islets. and Japan and
China over the Senkaku Islands.
However, Korea's Environment
Minister Yoon Seong-kyu said the trilateral meeting with China's vice
environment minister Li Ganjie and Japan's Environment Minister Nobuteru
Ishihara marked a "turning point" for the new governments in all three
countries.
Next year's meeting is set to take place in Korea.
